On September 16, 1905, the City of Vernon was founded by businessman John B. Leonis and ranchers J.J. and Tom Furlong. Vernon was incorporated in Los Angeles County as the first industrial city in the southwestern United States. The City has over 1,200 businesses (primarily industrial) employing more than 44,000 people within its 5.2 square miles.

On November 17, 2008 at its 13th Annual Eddy Awards, the Los Angeles County Economic Development Corporation (LAEDC) announced the selection of the City of Vernon as the winner of its annual “Most Business-Friendly City in Los Angeles County” competition for cities with 50,000 and fewer residents.
